UC Davis breaks ground on $3.74B hospital tower

UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif., has broken ground on a $3.74 billion expansion that includes a 14-story hospital tower and a five-story medical pavilion.

The new tower will add nearly 1 million square feet of space to the existing medical center. It will include new operating rooms, an imaging center, facilities for pharmacy and burn care units, and about 334 private patient rooms.

More than 250 of the rooms are being designed for greater flexibility in the event of a patient surge such as a pandemic, wildfire or other disaster. These will easily convert into intensive-care-unit rooms with air isolation to treat patients of any level of hospitalization.

“We are building into this new tower some of the lessons we learned from the recent pandemic. As an example, three out of four of the rooms in this new tower can be easily converted to fully functional ICUs if needed, tripling our ICU capacity,” UC Davis Health CEO David Lubarsky said in a July 22 news release. 

The current, 646-bed hospital will have between 675 and 700 inpatient beds when the project is completed in 2030.

“This project further harnesses the advantages of UC Davis Medical Center being Sacramento’s No. 1 hospital and delivering nationally ranked care,” Mr. Lubarsky said. “UC Davis Health is Sacramento County’s second-largest employer, and we’re making sure we are bringing not only healthcare, but jobs and community wealth-building to our surrounding neighborhoods.”

1. UT Health San Antonio to build $400M+ hospital
University of Texas Health San Antonio plans to build a 144-bed specialty and research hospital.

2. Conway Medical Center plans new 50-bed hospital
Conway (S.C.) Medical Center plans to build a hospital in South Carolina’s Carolina Forest area, the organization announced Sept. 8.

3. Tidelands Health plans new hospital in South Carolina
Tidelands Health plans to build a hospital in South Carolina’s Horry County, the Georgetown, S.C.-based organization said Sept. 8.

4. Atrium Health fights to open hospital in North Carolina county
Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health is still fighting to open a $147 million, 30-bed hospital in Mecklenburg County.

5. Abrazo Health to open Arizona hospital this fall
Phoenix-based Abrazo Health plans to open a hospital in Surprise, Ariz., this fall.

6. McLaren Healthcare boosts funding by $150M for Lansing health campus
After increasing its investment by $150 million, Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care said it will spend $600 million on its new health campus in the state’s capital of Lansing. The new campus will include a new 262-bed McLaren Orthopedic Hospital.

7. Ballad Health plans 2021 reopening for hospital closed 7 years
Johnson City, Tenn.-based Ballad Health plans to reopen a hospital in Virginia that has been closed since October 2013.

8. Ascension reopens Florida hospital ravaged by hurricane in 2018
Ascension Sacred Heart has reopened its hospital in Panama City, Fla., about two years after Hurricane Michael damaged the facility.

9. MarinHealth opens $535M hospital
MarinHealth in Greenbrae, Calif., has opened a new $535 million hospital.

10. HonorHealth to open 70-bed hospital in September
HonorHealth plans to open a 70-bed Phoenix hospital in September.

11. St. Louis University Hospital opens $550M hospital
SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital opened its $550 million facility to patients. The new facility is called the Grand New SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital.

12. Ascension Saint Thomas can build hospital in Tennessee county, beating out Vanderbilt
Ascension Saint Thomas has won approval to build a hospital in Tennesee’s Murfreesboro County, beating out a proposal from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

13. Trustees approve OSU’s $1.79B hospital
Ohio State University’s board of trustees unanimously approved this week its new $1.79 billion inpatient hospital.

2019 Hospital Construction Survey | Health Facilities Management

Eleven hospitals and health systems since Feb. 18 have advanced, completed or begun facility expansions and renovations with price tags of $300 million or more.

1. Moffitt Cancer Center’s $400M hospital construction to start in July
Tampa, Fla.-based Moffitt Cancer Center will begin construction of its 10-story, $400 million hospital in July.

2. UCSF’s plans 1.5M-square-foot hospital
The University of California San Francisco plans to build a 1.5 million-square-foot hospital and research facility in the city. The first phase of the construction included a $500 million pledge from the Helen Diller Foundation, according to The San Francisco Chronicle. 

3. City of Hope buys site for $1B cancer hospital, research center
Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope has purchased a 190,000-square-foot building and 11 acres of land as part of a $1 billion investment in a new hospital and cancer research center in Irvine, Calif.

4. Texas Children’s to build $450M hospital in Austin
Texas Children’s Hospital plans to build a $450 million freestanding women and children’s hospital in Austin, the organization said May 20.

5. Dell Children’s to invest $700M in new hospital, expansion
Austin, Texas-based Dell Children’s Medical Center plans to invest $700 million in the next three years to expand in the state

6. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia pumps $3.4B into expansion
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is planning to build a new 22-story patient tower.

7. Valleywise Health breaks ground on $900M Phoenix medical center
Phoenix-based Valleywise Health broke ground late February on its $900 million medical center in Phoenix. The health system told Becker’s Hospital Review May 13 that the project is “on track for completion in late 2023, and so far, no significant delays.”

8. UC Davis Medical Center details $1.9B expansion
UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif., plans to invest $1.9 billion in expansion and renovation projects over the next 10 years.

9. MUSC opens $389M Charleston children’s hospital
The Medical University of South Carolina opened its $389 million children’s hospital to patients Feb. 22.

10. Pennsylvania hospital’s $327M modernization project OK’d
Media, Pa.-based Riddle Hospital’s $327 million upgrade and expansion project received the green light from the Middle Township board and its parent organization, Main Line Health.

11. Texas A&M plans to build $550M complex in Texas Medical Center
College Station-based Texas A&M University plans to build a $550 million complex in the Texas Medical Center, a sprawling Houston hub of healthcare institutions.

 

 

 

Kaiser plans $13B expansion in Baltimore area

Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente plans to open 10 new medical facilities in the Baltimore area as part of a $13 billion expansion plan, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.

Kaiser currently operates 18 medical facilities in Maryland, including five in the Baltimore area, and is the second-largest health insurer in the state. The new facilities will be completed by 2028 and are expected to boost Kaiser’s insurance plan membership.

“We believe that the increased number of facilities will allow for easier access to care where people live and work — and that will create member growth,” Kaiser wrote in a statement to the Baltimore Business Journal.

Kaiser provides health coverage to roughly 70,000 people in Maryland and offers care to those members at its medical centers and clinics. Adding new facilities will allow Kaiser to help improve community health and support the local economy, Kim Horn, region vice preside of Kaiser, said in a statement to the Baltimore Business Journal.

“Our Baltimore strategy is driven by what we call impact investing,” she said. “We believe health care investments can support community health, which translates to rewarding jobs, steady income, stable housing and nutritious foods.”

The expansion is expected to create roughly 18,000 new jobs in Greater Baltimore.

NorthBay Medical Center in Solano County to open $225 million expansion

NorthBay Healthcare is set to unveil its five-year, three-phase $225 million expansion and rehab of the NorthBay Medical Center.

The 77,000-square-foot North Wing level II trauma center, located in Fairfield, California, will be open for business in October, according to the North Bay Business Journal.

The ED has been enlarged and a new welcome pavilion has also been added, as well as the final phase, which adds 22 beds, eight surgical suites, a 16-bed post-anesthesia care unit, diagnostic imaging services, and a new 6,000-square-foot kitchen and café, according to the journal.

“The North Wing perfectly illustrates dedication to offering advanced medicine right here for our community,” said B. Konard Jones, president and CEO, in a statement. “We’ve never been content to be just another community hospital. Instead, generations of NorthBay leaders vigorously pursued a path to clinical excellence, without sacrificing community service and compassionate care for every patient, every visit, every day.”

After the board of directors of NorthBay Healthcare approved a $205 million bond in 2016, work began on the North Wing project.

In its first phase, came the pavilion, which began operations in 2016. The second phase, which was finished in February, included redoing and enlarging the ED to add a CT scanner and 10 new treatment bays.

“We can (now) deliver modern medicine close to where patients live,” Jones told the journal, adding, “people should not have to cross a bridge or travel hours to get complex medical care.”

The project architects are Ratcliff Architects of Emeryville and the general contractor is DRP Construction.

NorthBay Healthcare was in the news in August when it earned Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, according to regional publication The Reporter.

“It is my honor and privilege to officially notify you that the Commission on Magnet has voted unanimously to credential NorthBay Healthcare Group as a Magnet Organization,” Sharon Pappas, RN, Magnet Recognition Program Commission executive committee member told those on the conference call hearing the news at the time.

This marks the second time since 2014 that the organization has won this recognition, according to the news site.

“The depth and breadth of engagement and support is exemplary,” Pappas told the audience during the call, adding, “this organization is unique. It goes above and beyond in its message to celebrate the value of nursing. You are a national role model for nursing excellence.”

“I’m so proud of our nursing team members for their ongoing commitment to nursing excellence, as well as the entire organization for participation and commitment in achieving this wonderful honor,” said vice president and chief nursing officer Traci Duncan, according to The Reporter. “Our nursing staff and nurse leaders helped create our Magnet environment using relationship-based care and our professional practice model. I’m honored to be a part of this team and this organization.”

Six hospitals or health systems announced, started or completed construction projects in the last two weeks:

1. Cape Cod Healthcare breaks ground on $180M tower 
Hyannis, Mass.-based Cape Cod Healthcare broke ground Sept. 23 on a six-story, $180 million patient tower.

2. Sutter Santa Rosa breaks ground on $158M expansion
Sutter Santa Rosa (Calif.) Regional Hospital broke ground Sept. 20 on its $158 million expansion.

3. Mercy Health to open $133M Arkansas hospital tower Oct. 21
Rogers-based Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas plans to open its $133 million, seven-story patient tower Oct. 21.

4. Michigan Medicine to build $920M hospital
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor plans to spend $920 million to build a new hospital, which is expected to take five years to complete.

5. Orlando Health opens 6th freestanding ER, keeping pace with rivals
Orlando (Fla.) Health opened its sixth freestanding emergency room in Central Florida., Sept. 16.

6. Hackensack Meridian Health breaks ground on $714M expansion
Hackensack (N.J.) Meridian Health broke ground Sept. 13 on its nine-story, $714 million pavilion.

 

Stanford’s $2B hospital to open in October

After more than a decade of planning and construction, Palo Alto, Calif.-based Stanford Health Care plans to open a $2 billion hospital in late October, according to the Palo Alto Weekly.

The 824,000-square-foot facility will house an expanded level 1 trauma center and emergency department, 368 private patient rooms, 20 operating rooms and five gardens with native California plants. It will be next to the hospital’s current facility.

After the new hospital opens, the old facility will be renovated at brought up to earthquake-resistant standards. Together, the two buildings will house 600 patient rooms. 

More than 4,000 medical staff will be trained this summer to familiarize themselves with the new facility before it opens to patients, hospital officials said.
