Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health ended the first quarter of fiscal year 2018 with operating income of $80 million, nearly double the operating income of $43.3 million the 93-hospital health system recorded in the same period of the year prior, according to recently released bondholder documents.

Trinity Health said revenues increased 2.9 percent year over year to $4.4 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2018. The revenue growth was largely attributable to higher patient volumes and payment rates. Trinity Health said patient volume increased year over year in 11 of its 20 regional markets.

After factoring in expenses, which increased 2.1 percent year over year, as well as losses on interest rate swaps and lower investment income, Trinity ended the first quarter of fiscal year 2018 with net income of $399 million. That’s compared to the first quarter of fiscal year 2017, when the health system posted net income of $467.5 million.

Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health’s operating income before other items increased 76 percent year over year to $266.1 million in fiscal year 2017, as the 93-hospital health system benefited from acquisitions, according to bondholder documents.

Trinity Health said revenues increased 7.9 percent year over year to $17.6 billion in the most recent fiscal year. The revenue was largely attributable to the acquisition of health systems in Connecticut, as well as volume growth, revenue cycle initiatives and payment rate increases. The system also benefited from ACO and bundled payment improvement initiatives and premium revenue from the system’s Medicare Advantage plans.

After factoring in expenses, which increased 7.3 percent year over year, as well as restructuring and impairment charges, Trinity ended the fiscal year with net income of $1.3 billion, up from $41.3 million for the year prior. The net income growth was primarily attributable to an increase in nonoperating items.

Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente reported higher revenue and operating income for its nonprofit hospital and health plan units in the second quarter of 2017.

Kaiser saw revenue climb to $18.1 billion in the second quarter of this year. That’s up 14.6 percent from revenue of $15.8 billion in the same period of 2016.

That boost was attributable, in part, to the system’s health plan unit. In the first half of 2017 Kaiser added 1.1 million health plan members. This growth was partially attributable to Kaiser’s acquisition of Seattle-based Group Health Cooperative in February. As of June 30, Kaiser had about 11.7 million members.

Kaiser reported operating income of $772 million in the second quarter of this year, up 57.2 percent from $491 million in the same period of 2016.

After factoring in non-operating income, Kaiser ended the second quarter of 2017 with net income of $1 billion, up from net income of $707 million in the second quarter of the year prior.
