I think the three ‘views’ of leadership are actually dimensions of one reality. The ‘leaders’ must have some of the natural or developed talents; these talents however will not find expression without the right emergent situations where teaming / following can form and lead to a group to a clear success that reinforces and enhances those talents. Speaking from personal experience, being ‘anointed’ at age 23 by a project team of 50+ year olds, as their preferred leader after demonstrating both competence / organisational cultural values and enhancing everyone’s reputations. I brought a new world view and technical skills with a propensity for doing things ‘differently’, learned how collaborate with a difficult team under the extreme duress from the highest levels after having failed to deliver and gave them the tools to get ahead of the curve and ultimately deliver the first commercial mission critical system operating error-free. After that, an MBA was a piece of cake as was every other business operation I ever encountered.
