Colusa (Calif.) Regional Medical Center has been closed since April, but the hospital has received a takeover offer that may allow it to reopen.

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, the only hospital in Berkeley, has announced it will be closing in the year 2030. The hospital is not compliant with future statewide earthquake standards. The building would have to get retrofitted for seismic stability by 2030, but Sutter Health doesn’t want to deal with the renovation.

Hospitals across the nation face a myriad of financial challenges, including underpayments from Medicare and Medicaid and new reimbursement cuts.
These financial challenges, combined with other issues such as declining patient volumes, have caused more than 60 rural hospitals to close over the past five years.
Below are 12 hospitals closures reported so far this year.

Sonoma West Medical Center confirmed Monday it has defaulted on millions of dollars in loans made to the struggling Sebastopol hospital by its two primary benefactors, raising further questions about its financial viability.
The treasurer for the hospital’s board of directors issued a letter last week warning that Sonoma West could be forced to close without an infusion of money. The warning, however, was questioned Monday night by the board of directors at the Palm Drive Health Care District, which provides financial support to the medical center.
MemorialCare, the hospital’s parent system, explored other options before deciding to shut down the facility. In August 2014, MemorialCare announced plans to convert the 73-bed hospital into an outpatient medical campus. The system worked with state lawmakers on legislation that would have allowed a satellite emergency department at the outpatient campus in San Clemente. However, the legislation failed in January. The following week, the San Clemente City Council voted to rezone the San Clemente campus property to require hospital services.
